Pikes Peak announces return of sunrise openings

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Pikes Peak and the City of Colorado Springs have announced the return of the popular sunrise openings on America's Mountain.

On Aug. 27 and Sept. 11, visitors will be able to access the Pikes Peak Highway starting at 4:45 a.m. Normal access hours during the summer months begin at 7:30 a.m.

During the sunrise opening events, the new visitor center at the summit will also open early.

"We are thrilled to announce the return of our sunrise openings this year,” said Skyler Rorabaugh, Pikes Peak – America’s Mountain Manager. "This is a spectacular and peaceful way to enjoy the first morning light from the top of America’s Mountain, and a great chance to also check out the new and improved Summit Visitor Center.”

These will be the first sunrise openings since 2018. The special events were not held while the new visitor center was being constructed.

A timed entry permit and admission must be purchased in advance to attend one of the sunrise openings. That can be done online at drivepikespeak.com. No sales will be made at the gate and access to the North Slope Recreation Area will be closed during the sunrise openings.

For current highway conditions, visitors can call (719) 385-73325.
