Suspect and another victim dead in shooting that killed an El Paso Co. Sheriff’s Deputy

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Monday, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) confirmed a second victim died during a deadly shooting in Security-Widefield. The suspect, accused of shooting and killing an El Paso County Sheriff's Deputy, was also found dead.

According to CSPD, the EPCSO received a 911 call transferred from Fort Carson at 5:07 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7.

CSPD says when two EPCSO patrol deputies and an officer with the Fountain Police Department arrived at the scene, they were met with gunfire from the suspect, 33-year-old John Paz.

One of the deputies, 39-year-old Andrew Peery, was hit. According to police, deputies returned fire.

Despite being transferred to a hospital, Peery later died at the hospital.

Through further investigation, CSPD says deputies and officers found a woman dead in the front yard of a residence in the 500 block of Ponderosa Dr.

Additionally, CSPD says the suspect was found deceased inside of the house from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police say while the El Paso County Coroner's Office will determine the official cause and manner of death, the deaths of Dep. Peery and the woman are being investigated as homicides committed by John Paz.

In accordance with Colorado Revised Statute 16-2.5-301, the Colorado Springs Police Department is the lead investigative agency for this officer-involved shooting. CSPD will also take the lead investigative responsibilities for the homicide of Dep. Peery and the other victim.

Her name has not been released.

The EPSO deputy who fired their weapon has been placed on administrative leave. According to CSPD, no other officers fired a weapon during the incident.
