Local barber shop gives out free back-to-school haircuts for kids in the community

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Neon's Salon and Barbershop gave haircuts to kids in the community Sunday, requiring nothing but a smile for payment.

For their third annual Haircuts for Smiles event, the shop partnered with Spartan Defense to give out the haircuts and also school supplies.

"All it costs is a smile from the kids, that's it," said Anna Marie Bray, the co-owner of Neon's Salon and Barbershop along with her husband Gerald. "We just want to give back to our community and love everybody and make it a little easier for parents to just get back in the swing of things.”

They hope the free haircuts helped ease financial strain for families and also gives kids the confidence they need to start the school year.

"Being able to come in and having those kids get a decent haircut and go back to school definitely builds their confidence," said Gerald. "It definitely puts them in a category where they're not concerned about being bullied or anything like that for the simple part of a haircut.”

As part of the school supply drive, Spartan Defense and Neon's coordinated donations of backpacks and other supplies, all in an effort to prepare kids in need for a strong start to the year.
