Nearly $200k owed to the City of Colorado Springs in outstanding parking tickets
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- According to a city audit that is projected for release in late July, there are currently 7,450 outstanding parking citations. That's $181,670 still unpaid to the City of Colorado Springs.
This is an issue Municipal Court Judge HayDen W. Kane II said the court is not letting go.
The court has sent out 4,058 delinquency notices to those with outstanding tickets. Those notices call for violators to pay their tickets immediately, contest them in Municipal Court, or risk greater consequences.
"What other people have to know is if they meet certain criteria and they have either enough tickets or enough money outstanding, they could make what's called the boot list," said Kane. "That's when they immobilize your vehicle because you have so many outstanding parking tickets."
Those with more than $100 worth of parking tickets will be placed on the boot list. In the case of towing, violators will then be responsible for their parking citation expenses and tow costs.
If a person believes they have wrongly received a citation, they can contest the ticket in the Municipal Court, but they must have proper evidence.
"Try to document as best you can your concerns with the citation," said Kane, "and again, my referees are open 8 to 12 and 1 to 4 every day of the week."
Those who wish to pay their overdue citations have multiple payment options.
They can pay on the Municipal Court website, but there will be an online payment processing fee. Other avenues for payment are by phone, mail, in person, or at the drop box located on court property at 224 E Kiowa St.
