San Luis Valley officials work to develop new hazard mitigation plan, request public input

SAN LUIS VALLEY, Colo. (KRDO) -- The San Luis Valley is in the process of developing a Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan. Now, officials are asking for the public's input.

According to the Costilla County Office of Emergency Management (OEM), the 2022 plan will build on current county mitigation plans.

Officials say that the new plan focuses on analyzing vulnerabilities to natural and human-caused hazards. It also identifies mitigation actions that can be taken to minimize property damage and public safety risk.

This plan involves all municipalities and certain special districts within the following counties:

  • Alamosa
  • Conejos
  • Costilla
  • Rio Grande
  • Mineral
  • Saguache

Costilla County OEM says the survey will help them receive input on areas of concern and suggestions the public might have for reducing the impacts of hazards before they happen.

The ten-question survey covers disasters like avalanches, drought, and wildfires.

The survey is open until August 8.
