Local chefs competing on Food Network’s The Great Food Truck Race

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Three chefs representing Colorado Springs are competing in the 15th season of the The Great Food Truck Race, set to premiere on Sunday.

DJ Williams, Houston Greenlee, and Gio Greenlee all met while attending Paragon Culinary School in August of 2020.

"Three culinary students. three veterans who fell in love with working with food," said Houston Greenlee.

DJ, Houston, and Gio make up Southern Pride Asian Fusion.

"Southern Pride Asian Fusion worked well with our group because I do southern style bbq cooking. Houston is from the south part of Texas, and Gio from the Philippines you know he brings in our asian aspect and we just blend it together," said DJ Williams.

Together they're working on their dreams. DJ currently runs Last Bite BBQ, but has plans of owning his own truck. Gio and Houston are moving to the Philippines and want to open their own restaurant.

"My goal is to be first full blooded Philippino Michelin star chef, there’s not one yet. I want to make history," said Gio.

The trio stresses that team work is what makes them unique on the show.

"I think that’s why America and everybody is going to fall in love with our team," said Houston.

They made their way on to The Great Food Truck Race after applying through a Facebook post.

"The hottest season yet. What it does is it takes what they consider top level chefs from across the nation, they give you a food truck and they let you go compete," explained Houston.

The show is not just a competition, but teaches them the workings of a business.

"It’s about how much are we going to charge for this dish, how are we going to present this dish, the prep, the shopping," said Houston.

While how far they make it is still under wraps, there are some things Southern Pride Asian Fusion does tell us.

"We put out good food at decent prices, and people loved it," said Houston.

The grand prize is $50,000, which will help them launch their businesses.

The Great Food Truck Race Premieres on Sunday at 8 pm on Food Network.

Southern Pride Asian Fusion will host a watch part at Fountain Corner Pocket starting at 6:30 pm.
