How to keep yourself safe when you’re out on the water

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- The start of the summer comes with more opportunities for fun in the water. However, the disaster on Lake Pueblo serves as a reminder to put safety first.

Here are some boating safety tips from Progressive:

  • Come prepared: Make sure to pack life jackets, personal flotation devices (PFDs), a first aid kit, a fire extinguisher on board, and your boating license and registration.
  • Make sure to have all your gear and lines in tip-top shape before hitting the water.
  • Check the forecast and adjust your plans accordingly.
  • Always have a sober skipper to captain the boat.
  • Make sure you're insured.
