Rattlesnakes are out, so here’s what you need to know to stay safe outdoors

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO)-- Coloradans usually have to share the trail with some sort of wildlife. Those sightings only become more frequent as the weather warms up. But some species aren't as friendly as others.

Rattlesnakes usually make an appearance now that it's warmer. They are most active in the mornings and evenings, but if you come across one the first rule is to steer clear.

While all snakes can bite, only some - like rattlesnakes - can pack a venomous punch. There are three types of rattlesnakes in Colorado, all of which are venomous. Wildlife experts say if these snakes feel threatened, they will make a rattling noise as a warning. That's your sign to stay away and keep your kids and dogs away, too.

“So if you're hiking with your pets or your kids, just make sure they stay close to you and they're not running around in the grass and stuff like that," said Cassidy English, District Wildlife Manager with Colorado Parks and Wildlife. "And keep your dogs on a leash. And a lot of dogs do get bit by rattlesnakes, unfortunately. So it's really important to keep them close to you. And we live in a huge wildlife area anyway. So it's always good to keep your dog on a leash.”

If you are bit by a rattlesnake, try to stay calm and call 911. First responders will get you antivenin as soon as possible. Wildlife experts say that when you're out on the trail it's important to be vigilant and aware. So if you're going to listen to music on your hike, consider only wearing one earbud so you'll be able to hear any unusual sounds, like the rattle of a snake in the grass.
