Pioneer Museum honors Black History Month

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., (KRDO) - In honor of Black History Month, the Pioneer Museum is hosting a guided tour of African American history. Visitors to the museum will learn about how African Americans have helped shape the history of Colorado Springs through various exhibits.

The guided tour at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum has one goal in mind and that's to explore how black citizens have continued to culturally, politically, economically, and socially shape the Pikes Peak region.

"The national theme for Black History month 2022 is black health and wellness and we're so excited, to tell stories of black health seekers within this exhibit, the City of Sunshine exhibit," said Meg Poole of the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum.

Inside the 'City of Sunshine' exhibit, you'll learn about a man named Sedley B. Jones, a health seeker who migrated to the Springs in 1880 seeking health and freedom after the Civil War and dealing with Tuberculosis in the 19th century, similar to what the 21st century is dealing with now with the COVID-19 pandemic.

"You can draw so many connections between tuberculosis and covid-19, you can empathize with health seekers, this idea of quarantining, right behind me is a tuberculosis hut where a patient would live while throughout their treatment so a lot of connections to what we are experiencing today," added Poole.

That's just one story that is relatable to the times today -- but so many more stories of African American athletes, scholars, entrepreneurs, and activists will be shared through their four exhibits.

The guided tours are at 11 a.m. every Saturday throughout February, it is a free family event. To RSVP, click here.
