Team Rubicon Supports the Elderly, Disabled, and Uninsured in Colorado Springs with Clean-Up Efforts following Severe Wind Storm

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Team Rubicon, a veteran-led disaster response organization, partnered up with other El Paso County agencies to assist the elderly, disabled, and uninsured community members with clean-up and recovery operations after last week's windstorm.

It's hard work at its finest, but a challenge team rubicon took on. A long-time volunteer for Team Rubicon says though the work is hard, it is worth it.

"It's very rewarding, you know we don't get paid, we are volunteers but at the end of the day…you can go and feel like you made a difference," said Marcus Williams.

For Mike Biondini, the owner of a 1989 historic home on East Espanola Street, this damage was something different.

In the 30 years he's lived in that property, never had he seen two trees collapse the way they did on December 15.

"You think of the worst and then knowing that your wife is inside the building that that tree just fell on and then having to run through the back of the house, that was the only access, I couldn't get in through the front of the house if I had to," said Biondini.

The trees blocked off their walkway and nearly collapsed into their home, but since there was no direct property damage to the house their insurance couldn't fully cover the costs.

"And that's why it is a Christmas miracle, I mean they just appeared at our door, it is an amazing thing and I had no idea about Team Rubicon until three days ago," added Biondini.

Team Rubicon spent two whole work days cleaning up their lawn that was bombarded with tree damage.

And it was all from the kindness of their heart.

"I am trying to comment on the goodness of people, and unfortunately it takes a disaster sometimes to see that but our neighbors, the outpouring from our neighbors and team rubicon has been exceptional," added Biondini.

The volunteer group made up of veterans and first responders assisted about ninteen homes for a total of more than 600 hours of work.

Team Rubicon concludes their work today in the springs after four days of helping with cleanup and recovery operations.
