COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO)-- COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions made for a mild flu season in 2020, with the United States logging its lowest number of hospitalizations caused by the flu since 2005, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Now, with COVID restrictions largely off the table, health officials say they're weary of what could be an "unpredictable" flu season.

Centura Health officials said they're seeing more people with respiratory illnesses this year when compared to 2020. Across the country, 200 million flu vaccines are now being distributed. Health officials said the shot is an important part of combatting what could be a harsh flu season.

Health officials urge anyone who starts to feel flu-like symptoms to be tested for the flu and COVID-19, because the symptoms are similar. You can still avoid getting sick by frequently washing your hands and practicing good hygiene
