Colorado schools see COVID case counts double

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- In Colorado, COVID-19 cases in schools have more than doubled in the last two weeks, according to data from the Colorado Department of Public Health.

Since the start of the school year, there has been a total of 329 cases.

While El Paso County as a whole is seeing a steady increase in hospitalizations and positivity rate, District 11 currently has 31 active COVID cases as of Thursday. The incidence rate rose above 200, making masks mandatory in the district.

But in recent days, D11 says there's been a decrease in cases.

“Over the last two weeks we actually have seen a little bit of a decrease in our system but I know El Paso County has seen a little bit of an opposite trend when it comes to incidence rates," said Devra Ashby, the Chief Communications Officer for D11.

Ashby tells KRDO News Channel 13 as cases continue to increase in the community, they will implement more safety precautions. But for now, the district says they have a heightened focus on making sure students succeed despite the challenges of COVID.

“We are helping our students especially our younger students when they are working on phonics or any situation where they can remove their masks,” Ashby said.

State data from the Colorado Department of Public Health issued Wednesday shows there are over 25 active COVID outbreaks at schools in El Paso County.
