COVID-19 cases on a steady decline in El Paso County

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - El Paso County Health data shows COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and the county's positivity rate are declining.

The COVID-19 incidence rate in El Paso County is currently 57.9 cases per 100,000 people in the last seven days.

The county currently has a positivity rate of 4% for the last 30 days, compared to a near 7% positivity rate for the month full month of May.

While the decline is good, local health leaders say the decline isn't as fast as other Colorado counties.

El Paso County Health leaders believe the area is behind in its decline of COVID-19 cases due to the low vaccination rate.

Denver County has a similar-sized population, but data indicates El Paso County's vaccination rate is nearly 14% less than Denver County's vaccination rate.

Additionally, health officials say emerging variants are still a big concern. As of June 28, there have been 109 reported cases of the Delta variant in El Paso County. Compare that to Denver County, where the amount of cases is six.

With the summer travel in full swing, El Paso County Public Health encourages people to get vaccinated to avoid harboring the virus.

"People come from all over the county, people come from all over the united states, they come from all over the world to visit our fantastic county here. So it's really important. We know that the viruses are going to be running through. We don't want to harbor them, right? So vaccination is our number one level population defense," said Stephen Goodwin with El Paso County Public Health.

The latest data shows 59.2% of eligible El Paso County residents have been vaccinated, according to county health data. That's still significantly behind the statewide number.
