Colorado College program puts art on wheels
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- One Colorado College professor and a group of her students are taking art on the road.
The Arts Mobile is a mobile art gallery designed to bring art across Colorado Springs.
Creator and Colorado College associate professor Naomi Wood started the idea after earning a National Endowment for the Humanities Teaching Fellowship.
"Because of COVID, it was like how do we get to bring people together and really use this interactive and teaching community-building funding. My research is in performing arts and visual arts, and I really wanted to explore the local arts scene here. I've been here for 10 years and wanted to bring local arts to campus and to local artists amongst themselves. The truck is parked here, but the idea is that it's mostly out in the community," said Wood.
The goal is to bring art into our community and showcase local artists. The CC Mobile Arts is described as "a robust program that seeks to provide recurring and diverse high-quality multi-disciplinary arts experiences at no cost to the public."
The bus showcases two murals done by local artists, has a stage for performances, and soon will feature an art gallery on the inside.
"I hope people are exposed to art forms they haven't seen before and also mostly that we get to know who's here. I think we're all often times looking outside of the city for performances and getting a feel for what's happening, but we actually have a lot of artists here who are producing and creating amazing things so i really want to celebrate that," said Wood.
If you want to find out where the Arts Mobile will be you can find them on social media @CCArtsMobile. If you would like to perform or have the bus come to your event you can email them at ccartsmobile@gmail.com.
The Arts Mobile will be at the Juneteenth celebration at America the Beautiful Park on Saturday.
