USPS aims to raise awareness of dog bites

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., (KRDO) - The U.S. Postal Service is calling all pet owners to be more aware of their pets. National Dog Bite Awareness Week runs from June 12-18, with the theme "Be aware: Any Dog Can Bite."

The campaign wants to ensure to address aggressive dog behaviors that can pose a threat to mail carriers and how the community they serve can help keep them safe.

In Colorado last year, 123 postal employees were attacked. Colorado Springs tied with Aurora ranking second in dog attacks in 2020 with eight, followed by Pueblo with six, Denver ranks number one with 44 dog attacks.

The campaign wants to ensure to address aggressive dog behaviors that can pose a threat to mail carriers and how the community they serve can help keep them safe.

The USPS recommends pet owners keep their pet or dog in a safe place and away from the mailbox during the mail delivery time.
Use the informed delivery free feature, which allows customers to know when the mailman is coming around and owners can take precautions and secure their dog
An effort from both parties to refrain anyone getting hurt.

A dog attack can cause serious consequences for the owner. When a dog attacks a letter carrier, the dog owner may have to compensate the victim for medical expenses, lost work hours and replacement of uniform which can all amount to thousands of dollars.
