Museum of Boulder working to preserve memorial for King Soopers shooting

BOULDER, Colo. (KRDO) -- Museum of Boulder is starting to preserve the memorial outside of a King Soopers Grocery Store where ten people died after a man opened fire.

Thousands of items are currently piled up outside of the store on Table Mesa. Flowers, notes, and candles all line the fence.

Now, the Museum of Boulder has made it its mission to preserve the memories of those lost while helping the community heal through the Boulder Strong Project.

"You see the outpouring of their grief, of their wishes for change. It's just such a raw site of that emotion," said Chelsea Pennington Hahn, the curator of collections at the Museum of Boulder.

The museum says moving the memorial will also protect it from impending weather.

The museum also reached out to other museums that have taken action in their communities following similar tragedies. Advice was given by the Orange County Historical Society in Orlando Florida, which dealt with the 2016 Pulse Nightclub Tragedy, and the Clark County Museum in Nevada, which dealt with the 2017 Las Vegas concert tragedy.

Museum of Boulder says the stories do not belong to the museum, "rather, we aim to be a community resource as we work collaboratively with individuals and institutions that were impacted to expand our understanding of the tragic event and preserve the community’s reaction to it."

Digital photos and videos from those directly involved, including first responders and family members, can also be submitted.
