COLORADO (KRDO) -- Independence Pass on Highway 82 in Colorado has reopened for the season, the Colorado Department of Transportation announced on Thursday.

The pass, which is on Hwy 82 between Pitkin and Lake counties, reaches over 12,000 feet in elevation and offers stunning views all around for travelers who are making their way to and from Aspen.

CDOT reopened the gates at around noon, and 63 vehicles were the first to travel up the highway.

According to CDOT, crews had to work on "significant rockfall mitigation" during the week of May 17, and about 25 loads of rock were removed from the rock face next to Hwy 82.

CDOT says vehicles that are 35 feet or longer are still prohibited.
