The lovable Liberty Lancer soccer team
The Liberty Lancers have had a historic season. It's been fifteen years since the boys soccer team has won state, and that was as a Class 4A team. This is the first Lancers team to reach the Class 5A Final Four, "I don't think any of us, coming into the season, expected it to be this good. Now I believe we can go all the way," says Liberty defender, Miles Seminario.
They're led by Jeff Koch, who is one of the best players in the state. Jeff's twin brother, Theo, is the goalkeeper. Now they have a chance to win state together, "It's an amazing experience. We've been playing together since we were two. This is what you work for, and play soccer for. It's an exciting time," says Liberty goalkeeper, Theo Koch. His brother, Jeff adds, "He actually just started playing goalie two years ago, and he's obviously pretty good at it. For me, being in front of him, I try to make his job easier, and do what I can to prevent shots. If one does get by, I trust him. I know he's good enough to make the save."
There are lots of reasons the Lancers are here. Their coach, Chaz Washington is one. Part of it boils down to commitment. The entire team is remote learning, making the sacrifice so that none of them get sick. With that level of commitment, it's easy to see who they got here. It's already paid off, "No one wants to learn online, but we're willing to make that sacrifice to go out and win a state championship. This is the most I've ever seen us as a team. We're really together. We really have the right mindset. We're all in this for each other," Liberty center back, Harry Seibert. "We kind of realize how important this is for us, and our program, and we all want to be a part of it. Making the sacrifice to go online, we think it's all worth it" says Jeff Koch.
