Name of suspect in Colorado Springs officer-involved shooting identified

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The suspect in an officer-involved shooting that happened April 22 on Garden of the Gods Road has been identified.

On Thursday, April 22, officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department responded at 6:30 a.m. to reports of a stolen car in the 500 block of Garden of the Gods Road.

Officers found the vehicle with no license plates in the parking lot of the Quality Inn. When officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, CSPD says the man exited the vehicle with what appeared to be an AR-15 pointed at his chin.

According to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, the suspect then began walking towards the Phillips 66 gas station. Officers gave him verbal commands to put the weapon down, however, he did not comply.

The suspect approached a citizen who was pumping gas and continued ignoring commands to comply.

One officer deployed his Taser, however, that was ineffective. That's when another officer fired at least one round and the suspect was hit at least one time.

The suspect, identified Tuesday as Richard Quintana, was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

The Coroner's Office has yet to determine the official cause and manner of death.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is the lead investigative agency for this officer-involved shooting. The involved officer was not injured and was placed on administrative leave, per their policy.
