COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The latest update for Tuesday shows the El Paso County Jail has had more than 1,000 cases of Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic, and 300 of those cases have come in the last three days.

Since the start of the pandemic, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office has worked closely with El Paso County Department of Public Health to try and figure out ways to limit the spread of COVID-19.

However, according to the El Paso County Sheriff's Office website, since the start of the pandemic, 927 inmates and 85 staff members have tested positive for the virus.

Considering the density of people living within close quarters, keeping inmates and guards healthy has been difficult. To help fight against the spread of this disease, the sheriff's office has implemented some very restrictive housing measures. These restrictions are based on scientific data, medical guidance, and industry best practices as they apply to the layout of the jail.

The sheriff's office says COVID-19 within the El Paso County Jail will remain a top priority moving forward and they say they will continue to test and care for every employee and inmate.
