Colorado Springs historic old depot adds new restaurants
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- A historic building which has been a part of the Colorado Springs community for more than a century is getting some serious upgrades.
The Old Depot in Downtown Colorado Springs dates back to the late 1800's. For owners Charles and Amy Ochs, it means so much more.
"We've had this building in our family since 1971," Charles Ochs said.
The Ochs said it was important they preserve as much of the train depot as possible, while also creating something new.
"We were looking for options on how to revitalize it and really make it accessible to the community."
After brainstorming several concepts, Amy Ochs said they decided to split the spot into three different sections.
"Everything's been brought into modern day, but we're creating a space where our community can come and enjoy themselves once again."
The venue, formerly home of Giuseppe's, will now encompass a family style burger spot, sandwich depot and farm to table restaurant.
The Ochs said keeping each of the venues separate has also helped with Coronavirus restrictions.
"So, then we have different spaces for each one. So, we're able to adhere to even the more strict COVID-19 restrictions and from that standpoint we're very blessed."
These changes are in addition to socially distanced seating, stricter cleaning protocols and curbside takeout.
But Ochs admits, opening a new business in the height of a pandemic isn't without difficulty.
"Of course it's challenging, most definitely it's challenging, but what we want to do is make people feel safe."
Despite the challenges, the Ochs plan to make this new space a staple for years to come.
"We've owned the building for 50 years. It's going to be here another 50 years. We'll all get through this."
