2 feet of snow could fall on Cameron Peak Fire Sunday
COLORADO (KRDO) -- A strong cold front will push into northern Colorado early Sunday morning, bringing with it the potential for heavy snow and sharply cooler temperatures across the Front Range.
That could be great news for firefighters battling wildfires in northern Colorado.
Anywhere from 12-24" could accumulate in the high elevations through late Sunday night, which will dramatically help the fight to control the record-setting Cameron Peak Fire.
This won't be the first time the Cameron Peak Fire has received snowfall, though. Do you remember the blast of winter in early September?
That event has given us a pretty good idea of what to expect out of this upcoming snowstorm.
As the cold front approaches Colorado, strong prefrontal westerly winds will increase, making for erratic fire behavior and the risk of fire growth. Gusts on Saturday will reach at least 40-50mph and possibly stronger on the mountain peaks. If we can escape Saturday without any type of fire growth it would be a big win for firefighters.
After approximately 8-14" of snow fell on the wildfire back in September, it tempered fire behavior significantly by allowed ground crews to construct new fire containment lines. The Cameron Peak Fire saw no significant growth for over two weeks after the snowfall.
With this snowstorm still 5 days away there still exists uncertainty with the forecast. We'll keep you updated with any developments.
