Woodland Park School District transitions to virtual learning for ‘snow day’

WOODLAND PARK, Colo. (KRDO) -- Education leaders in the Woodland Park School District have opted for students to shift to virtual learning today - instead of having the day off, like most snow days in the past.

On September 8, all students in the Woodland Park School District were allowed back on campus. But just a day later, the snow kept them all home.

“We were much more prepared to handle teaching our students at home because of the COVID situation,” says Steve Woolf, Superintendent at Woodland Park School District.

Students in elementary school are still enjoying the day off, but middle school and high school students who’d otherwise be on campus are working virtually.

With remote learning now integrated into many schools' formats, Woolf says typical snow days may be a thing of the past.

"You’re going to read about snow days in your history books someday because now, things continue," says Woolf.

Woolf says many students in the Woodland Park School District were given Chromebooks after COVID-19 shutdown schools earlier in the year, so accessibility shouldn't be an issue.

But Woolf says there are other repercussions of closing down their campuses.

“For a lot of kids, this is their safe place to go, and if I call off school, many of them don't get fed," says Woolf. "Some parents don't get to go to work if we keep the kids from school, and that’s costly.”

Parents in the Woodland Park District were given the option to keep their students in a remote learning program even after campuses opened back up.

For those who opted to do so, Wednesday's snow day feels like any other.

“It didn’t impact me personally, my kids are working virtually anyways, " says Jennifer Armstead. "I just think there’s going to be a lot of back and forth this year. I’d like my kids to have a consistent experience.”

Woolf says parents are notified of snow days the morning of or as early as the night before.
