Woman and child killed in house fire near Buena Vista

CHAFFEE COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- A woman and a child were killed in a house fire near Buena Vista overnight.

Deputies say they arrived to a home engulfed in flames after 1:30 a.m. Thursday, about one mile north of Buena Vista just west of Highway 24.

Firefighters say a man and girl had escaped the home, but a woman and a boy were reportedly still inside.

Fire crews went inside the burning building and retrieved the two people still inside, but the woman and boy were pronounced dead at the scene.

Both surviving people were taken to a nearby hospital. The man had to be airlifted to a regional burn center, but the young girl didn't have serious injuries and was released to family, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff John Spezze says no identities will be released until the next of kin is notified.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
