Cheyenne Mountain Zoo to reopen June 6 for members, June 11 for general public

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Big news! After nearly three months of closure, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo announced late Friday that it will begin to reopen in phases, starting with a two-week limited opening. The zoo will open Saturday first to members and then to the general public on June 11 through June 19.

A press release sent to KRDO says the zoo's variance to reopen was approved by the state health department, but only for the next two weeks. Zoo officials encourage customers to follow them on social media for details beyond June 19.

During the initial two-week launch, there will of course be some new rules for COVID-19.

Details on the zoo's website explain that customers will have to reserve a ticket online in advance and show up at a scheduled arrival time. The zoo will be operating at a limited capacity to abide by social distancing guidelines.

“We are thankful for our partnership with the Zoo, and for their innovative leadership in working to create a plan to safely reopen,” said Susan Wheelan, El Paso County Public Health Director, in a prepared statement. “The Zoo brings people so much joy, and we are thrilled our community will be able to enjoy this local attraction again.”

Zoo staff will be wearing masks within six feet of others and guests are encouraged to do the same, the release said. Workers will also be disinfecting high-touch areas throughout each day.
