PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- A car theft ended with a gunshot wound Wednesday when the theft victim and his father decided to confront the suspect themselves.

Around 11 a.m. Pueblo officers responded to the area of East 4th St. and Erie Ave. for a reported shooting. At the scene, officers found a 62-year-old man who had been shot in the hand.

Police learned that the man and his son were in the area attempting to find his son's stolen car. When the son and his father arrived in the area, they found the stolen vehicle and saw a male suspect sitting inside. The two followed the car as the suspect drove to the area of East 4th and Erie and then stopped, police say.

That's where the auto theft victim and his father approached the stolen vehicle on foot, they told police. The pair tried to physically pull the suspect out of the car, police say. That's when the suspect pulled out a handgun and fired. The suspect then drove away.

The father was struck in the hand and later treated for the injury, which police say isn't life-threatening.

While trying to pull the suspect from his car, the auto theft victim dropped his cellphone in the car. Pueblo police officers were later able to track the cellphone signal to ultimately recover the car in the 2000 block of Cambria Drive.

The suspect, who was not in the car when police found it, is still at large. Police say he's described as a Hispanic male wearing a sports jersey.
