Crews battle early morning mobile home fire in Pueblo West

PUEBLO WEST, Colo. (KRDO) - Firefighters from Pueblo West and Pueblo are responding to a fire at a mobile home in Pueblo West.

Crews were called to the 200 block of E. George Ave., just before 3 a.m. Monday. The fire was put out in about 25 minutes and involved two RVs. The ceiling to the mobile home collapsed.

Three people were inside the residence at the time, and got out safely. Unfortunately, several pets that were inside with them did not survive.

Charles Peters who lives right next door woke up to the massive fire. 

Peters said, “I just heard a lot of pops and bangs, and I opened up the door and it was just blazing.”

When Peters saw the fire he said he called 911 and then grabbed his son and sprinted out of his home.

“I don’t even know what I was thinking. I mean I just saw the flames and it was just you know really surreal. I just grabbed my son and we got out of there.”

Fire officials tell KRDO Newschannel 13 that there was so much material in and around the mobile home that it forced crews to attack the flames from the outside.

Pueblo West Fire Chief Brian Caserta said, “Normally we like to make an interior attack to get to the fire as quickly as we can, but again the contents really did not allow us to safely execute that kind of maneuver to get inside and put the fire out.”

Crews are currently mopping up the scene and monitoring for any hot spots. They expect to be out there for another couple of hours.
