Escaped Custer Co. inmate captured, 1 still sought
WALSENBURG, Colo. (KRDO) - The Custer Co. Sheriff's Office says an inmate who escaped from its jail has been captured in Walsenburg.
The Huerfano Co. Sheriff's Office received tips that Jerry Williams, 39, was hiding out in a home in the Walsenburg city limits. Deputies obtained a search warrant and discovered Williams in a crawlspace.
According to a press release from the Custer Co. Sheriff's Office, Williams initially refused to come out. Huerfano Co. deputies deployed pepper spray, and the inmate surrendered to law enforcement a short time later.
The home where Williams was hiding was residence on the 600 block of W. 8th Street. Exclusive home security video obtained by KRDO from a neighbor shows several patrol cars surrounding the home in question around 10:30 pm Tuesday evening. 30 minutes later, several deputies could be seen breaching the front door. One hour later, Williams is seen being taken out of the home.
Colorado State Patrol, the Department of Wildlife and the Violent Offender Task Force assisted with this operation.
On Jan. 11, authorities say Williams and Bryan Webb, 30, overpowered a detention deputy at the Custer Co. Jail and locked her in a cell. The inmates then stole a minivan outside the facility. The van was found a few days later in the Walsenburg area.
Williams was being held on charges of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, illegal possession of a handgun, and domestic violence. Webb was being held on drug charges, introduction of contraband into a detention facility, and assault on a peace officer, according to the Custer County Sheriff's Office.
At this time the other inmate, Bryan Webb, remains at large. Huerfano County Sheriff Bruce Newman believes the former Walsenburg resident is still in the area.
