CANON CITY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Police in Canon City are investigating a fatal shooting that took place only a few blocks away from Main Street on Tuesday night.

Officers were dispatched to the 200 block of North 3rd Street just past 8 p.m. Tuesday for a report of yelling and gunshots being fired.

“Officers found a white male on the doorsteps of a home," said Sgt. Steve Huskey with the Canon City Police Department. "He had a gunshot wound. He was deceased when officers arrived on scene.”

The victim was identified as 27-year old Ashton Ladd, who's a Canon City resident and father of a 6-year-old girl.

After the shooting, Canon City police detained two individuals connected to the shooting for questioning. Police eventually arrested one and released the second. The suspect in custody has not been identified. What led up to the shooting is unclear.

Investigators tell KRDO they believe the victim and suspect were acquaintances. While family told KRDO that Ladd was with his brother when shots rang out, they say the 27-year-old met the suspect just minutes before the shooting occurred.

Canon City police are still conducting an investigation, and charges have not yet been officially filed. However, police say the suspect could be facing a second-degree murder charge.

The El Paso County Coroner is set to perform an autopsy on Ladd Thursday morning.
