Fort Lupton officer critical following shooting

FORT LUPTON, Colo. (KRDO) - A Fort Lupton police officer is in critical condition, after being shot in the line of duty.

The incident happened just before 11 p.m. Monday, on the 200 block of Ponderosa Pl. in Fort Lupton. According to a press release by the 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team, officers were responding to calls of an armed person attempting to make contact with a person inside a home. The suspect began firing at officers when they arrived on the scene.

Officers returned fire, striking the suspect. Both the suspect and the officer who was hit were transported by helicopter to hospitals in the area. Both are listed in critical condition.

The 19th Judicial Critical Incident Response Team is handing the investigation.
