WATERVILLE, ME (WMTW) — Waterville’s newest firefighter is making history — Katie Hennessey is the department’s first female career firefighter.
Hennessey is a firefighter, EMT and registered nurse, Waterville Fire-Rescue Chief Shawn Esler said.

“Her experience working in an emergency room will greatly strengthen our EMS program and contribute to our core mission,” firefighters wrote on Facebook.
Out of nearly 1 million firefighters in the United States, just 7% are female, according to the National Fire Protection Association.
