Molokai, HI (KITV) — For the 67th year, canoes took off from Molokai’s west side, for a 31 mile paddle across the treacherous Ka’iwi Channel to the shores of Waikiki on O’ahu.

More than 1,000 paddlers from around the world competed in the Moloka’i Hoe — the men’s world championship in outrigger canoe racing.

It’s one of the longest running annual team sporting events in Hawai’i, second only to football — perpetuating one of Polynesia’s most important traditions.
