Man arrested after punching Colorado Springs officer in the face

A Colorado Springs officer was assaulted at the WalMart on 8th Street while trying to apprehend a shoplifter late Saturday night.

Officer C. Gardner was working an extra duty shift at the WalMart when a would-be shoplifter became aggressive and threatened Gardner.

Gardner used his taser on the suspect, but it had little effect and the suspect again tried to leave. When the officer attempted to restrain the suspect, a fight ensued and he punched Gardner in the face.

Additional officers arrived and took the suspect into custody. The man, identified as 29-year-old Garin Shaw, was arrested on second degree assault on an officer and theft.

Both the officer and the suspect received minor injuries; neither required medical treatment.
