Police investigating fatal shooting near downtown Colorado Springs

A suspect is in custody following a police investigation of a fatal shooting near downtown Colorado Springs Monday afternoon.

At approximately 3:40 p.m. officers responded to a reported shooting in the 500 block of South Nevada Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found one man dead in an alley behind 525 S. Nevada Avenue.

According to a release from CSPD, the victim was driving through the alley and exited the vehicle where he had contact with the suspect. The suspect fired at least one shot and then left the area in a red SUV.

A witness to the scene says the suspect crashed his car into another vehicle soon after fleeing the scene. The suspect then exited his car and ran back towards the scene of the shooting.

Police confirm that the suspect hit an unmarked police cruiser, rolling it onto its side.

Sergeant Jason Reeser was responding to the scene in the unmarked cruiser when the suspect traveling westbound on East Rio Grande Street struck his vehicle as Reeser passed through the intersection of S. Nevada Ave and Rio Grande. Reeser was not injured and was able extricate himself with the help of nearby citizens.

The witness tells us that the shooting appeared to be the result of an argument between the victim and the suspect.

“Seemed like it was disgruntlement over some past issue, I’m not sure what, but they knew each other for sure,” he said.

He described the suspect as a thin, black male about 50 years old.

Colorado Springs police say that several streets in the area are closed for the investigation, including S. Nevada Ave. at Rio Grande, Las Animas and Moreno Ave. They ask pedestrians and motorists to avoid the area.
