Update to Colorado Springs welcome sign almost complete

Leaders in Colorado Springs say the modernization of the city’s gateway sign along Interstate 25 is almost complete and set to reflect the city’s brand as Olympic City USA.

Colorado Springs Mayor John Suthers said there is no better time to embrace the sign’s new look ahead of several openings and projects like the U.S. Olympic Museum, Air Force Academy Visitors Center, Hybl Center for Sports Medicine, and the Downtown Sports and Events Center.

“Our city has reveled in its rich sporting history and it continues to build upon its identity as Olympic City USA with elite and amateur events flocking to our venues year after year,” Suthers said.

The revamped sign will maintain the same structure as the old sign but crews will resurface it with an aluminum composite metal panel similar to the Broadmoor World Arena. The new look will cost $217,000, which is coming exclusively from private donors.
