Driver killed in crash, passenger flown to hospital with serious injuries
One person is dead and another has sustained serious injuries after a crash northeast of the Black Forest area Sunday morning.
Colorado State Patrol responded to a call at 11:32 a.m. for a single vehicle crash at Elbert Road and Evans Road.
A press release from CSP says the driver, identified as 77-year-old Earl Whittemore of New Mexico, was ejected and pronounced deceased on the scene. The passenger, 57-year-old Cara Brenze also of New Mexico, was flown to a hospital with serious injuries.
According to the release, a 1997 Acura NSX was traveling southbound on Elbert Road when it traveled onto the right shoulder. The driver over-corrected, causing the vehicle to rotate and skid. The car traveled off of the left shoulder and became air born for a short distance. The car then collided with a fence and began to roll over.
Both occupants were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. At this time, alcohol and/or drug use are not being considered as factors in the crash. Speed is being considered as a factor while the crash remains under investigation.
CSP asks any witnesses to the crash to contact Trooper Joshua Yoder at (719) 544-2424.
