Pentagon reveals more about Green Beret killed in Afghanistan
The family of a Green Beret who was killed in Afghanistan has allowed the Army to reveal more about his military career.
Master Sgt. Jose Gonzalez, 35, was killed Aug. 21 during combat operations in Faryab Province. He was a native of California and served 17 years in the military. According to the Defense Department, Gonzalez was deployed seven times: twice as a Marine, and five times as an infantryman and later as a Green Beret.
Gonzalez was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart. During his time in the military, he also earned the Army Commendation Medal, the NATO Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, and other commendations.
Master Sgt. Luis Deleon-Figueroa, 31, was also killed in the attack on Aug. 21. He was a Massachusetts native and was deployed six times during his 13-year career. Deleon-Figueroa was also posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart. His commendations include the Army Commendation Medal with Valor, the NATO Medal, and the Ranger Tab.
Both men were assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. At this time funeral arrangements are still pending.
