Colorado College announces pilot program to make tuition more affordable
Colorado College is trying to make it easier for students of all socioeconomic backgrounds to attend the school.
The college, located in Colorado Springs, announced a pilot program that would allow students with families earning less than $200,000 to pay less to attend.
Mark Hatch, the Vice President of Enrollment Management at the college said, “we do not want families to cross off Colorado College because of the sticker price.”
The program, Colorado Pledge will allow “for students from Colorado families with an adjusted gross income of less than $60,000, there will be no parental contribution for tuition, room, and board at CC,” and “students from Colorado families with an adjusted gross income between $60,000 and $125,000, there will be no parental contribution for tuition at CC; they will only pay for room and board.”
For families earning between $125,000 and $200,000, CC will be priced similar to state schools like the University of Colorado Boulder or Colorado State University in Fort Collins.
CC hopes the appeal of saving up to about tens of thousands of dollars will attract a more diverse pool of applicants. According to the school’s website, tuition is $57,612 for the 2019-2020 academic year.
The school is making this initiative possible with the help of donors. They hope to bring in more students from Colorado and make it as affordable as public state schools.
Hatch explains, “obviously we’ve been very very fortunate with generous donations. We have an endowment that exceeds 750 million dollars at Colorado College for 2200 students.”
“Obviously we’ve been very very fortunate with generous donations. We have an endowment that exceeds 750 million dollars at Colorado College for 2200 students,” he continues.
The ultimate hope is more students from Colorado start attending the private college.
