Colorado Springs outdoor shops struggle amid China tariffs

On September 1, a 15% tariff will take effect on a portion of $300 billion in Chinese imports, said President Donald Trump. It will hit items such as school supplies, sporting goods, and some clothing.

The trade war is directly impacting outdoor shops like Mountain Chalet.

Bike shops will also see the change affect business. Nearly 95% of bikes sold to the United States are made in China and Taiwan, according to statistics from the National Bicycle Dealers Association.

As more take on the outdoors this season, customers may see an uptick on prices for shoes, tents, sleeping bags, bikes and more.

Trump says serious negotiations with China will begin after the U.S. received two “very good calls” from Beijing.

“We are going to start talking very seriously,” said Trump. He says the Chinese want to make a deal, and he thinks one will finally be reached.
