Man accused of burning 3-year-old step-son found guilty
A Colorado Springs man was found guilty earlier this month by a jury for burning his three-year-old step song giving him second and third degree burns.
Albert Medina was charged with child abuse and assault with a deadly weapon back in 2018. Since that time Shaylene Nombrano the boys mother says her son Eliaz is recovering well and just started school. A stark difference from when he was in the hospital.
Eliaz had to undergo multiple surgeries after getting seriously burned with hot water. However, he still has to have some procedures done and where a compression shirt for another year.
In El Paso County court, witness testimony revealed Medina put Eliaz in the shower after the child couldn’t make it to the bathroom and had an accident. Eliaz telling his step father the water was too hot but Medina said, “Shut up you need to learn your lesson.”
Eliaz also took the stand to tell his story of what happened. His mother tells us it broke her heart, “Having to listen to what had happened and hearing it from his mouth how he explained it. It was tough,” Nombrano says.
Since the ruling, she says it has brought her family peace, “My kids were happy, they are sleeping better. I’m sleeping better but it was a happy day.”
Nombrano hopes Medina will be behind bars for a long time for what he did to her son, “It’s not just physical that my son is going through; it’s mental and emotional stuff.”
She tells us Medina will be sentenced in October.
