Hickenlooper confirms U.S. Senate run
Just one week after dropping out of the race for the White House, former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper announced he’s now seeking a U.S. Senate seat.
Overnight Thursday, Hickenlooper revamped his website and launched an announcement video on YouTube.
“I don’t think Cory Gardner understands that the games he’s playing with Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell are hurting the people of Colorado,” Hickenlooper said in his video. “We ought to be working together to move this country forward and stop the political nonsense.”
He began his 2020 presidential campaign by branding himself as a moderate, but failed to gain traction and raise enough funds to continue through the series of Democratic debates this year.
Hickenlooper hopes to unseat Sen. Cory Gardner in 2020. Gardner is considered the most vulnerable Republican senator in the country. A recent poll suggests Hickenlooper would have a large lead over other Democrats who are also considering a run.
