UPDATE: Employees return after fire broke out at Martin Drake Power Plant

Crews responded to a reported fire at the Martin Drake Power Plant near downtown Colorado Springs Tuesday night.

Wednesday morning, we spoke with Colorado Springs Utilities’ representative Steve Berry, who told us normal business has resumed at the power plant.

Berry also confirmed that no homes or businesses were affected during the fire, because power was pulled from the nearby Roy Nixon Power Plant, which was already being used to supplement the two turbines in use at Drake.

Berry assured us that utilities bills will not be affected after this fire, like they were after a fire broke out at the trail back in 2014.

The Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to the call just before 8:30 p.m. and extinguished the fire at 8:53 p.m.

All employees were evacuated and have been accounted for with no known injuries, according to a tweet from the Colorado Springs Fire Department.

The fire was a small fire by Unit 7. The cause of the fire is not yet known at this time. Repairs are underway on the Unit 7 turbine and an investigation will take place over the next several days.

Fire crews worked with Colorado Springs Utilities on the interior of the plant.

According to CSU, all employees will report as normal to work Wednesday.

The coal-fired plant provides about 25% of the community’s power year-round, according to their website.
