Wildfire rages at Palisade Peach Festival, likely sparked by fireworks

A professional firework show took place at the Palisade Peach Festival Friday night, likely sparking a wildfire that burned three to five acres, according to the East Orchard Mesa Fire Department.

The Palisade Policed Department said in a Facebook post that everyone was able to evacuate safely. No injuries were reported. One vehicle was damaged.

According to a Facebook post by the fire department, flames were reported south of Riverbend Park in East Orchard Mesa just after 9 p.m.

Fire crews were already staged in the area to supervise the event, and they immediately responded. In an update Saturday, the fire department said they are now focused on building containment lines around the fire.

“Steep terrain and smoldering cottonwood trees are creating challenging conditions for firefighters,” said the fire department in a Facebook post.

A Red Flag warning has been forecasted for this afternoon and hot, dry weather with wind gusts up to 30 mph are expected. The fire department says that the official cause of the fire has not yet been determined, although fireworks are suspected.

The Tilman Bishop State Wildlife Area is closed due to the fire. The fire department asks the public to watch out for fire engines and to avoid parking alongside the road to take pictures.

The Palisades Chamber of Commerce said in a Facebook post that the festival will continue Saturday as planned.
