Governor recall group has less than a month to gather signatures

It’s been just over a month since the group Dismiss Polis filed the petition to recall Governor Jared Polis. Now the clock is ticking for them to gather hundreds of thousands of signatures to get a recall vote on the ballot.

Signing locations have been set up all across Colorado. Edward Stone a volunteer in Woodland park says he is surprised by the turnout their office has received so far.

“A lot of people are very eager to have this done and to have this governor removed,” Stone says.

On the petitions it states the reasons for the recall come down to four bills that passed within the six months Polis took office. They are the red flag bill, national popular vote bill, sex education bill, and the oil and gas bill.

The latest round of protests in Colorado Springs happened just last week when the governor visited. Outside of where he was speaking protestors gathered outside collecting more signatures. Brenda Lynch was one of them. She says it’s not just Republicans who are upset with the Governor.

“There are many, many people not just republicans, but independent and Democrat that are signing our petitions that want him out of office,” Lynch says.

We asked Governor Polis for his thoughts on the recall. He says it’s not going to stop him from doing his job.

“Whenever you have anything going on like that you just have to focus on doing a good job and running the state,” Polis says.

In total petitioners need at least 631,266 signatures to get the recall vote on the ballot. A spokesperson for Dismiss Polis says they should have an estimate of how many people have signed the petitions so far later this week.
