Denver police confirm death in electric scooter v. vehicle crash

A man died Friday from injuries he sustained when he was hit by a car while riding an electric scooter on August 4, Denver police said in a tweet Monday morning.

Cameron Hagan, 26, was riding a scooter eastbound in the westbound lanes of West 32nd Avenue near Federal Boulevard when he rode in front of a Honda Civic, according to our partners at KUSA. A traffic report released Monday by the Denver Police Department confirmed that he was struck by the vheicle.

No charges are expected to be leveled against the driver because officials determined that Hagan was at fault.

This is the first reported scooter-related death since they were implemented over a year ago, but emergencies rooms have become familiar with scooter-related injuries.

“We’re seeing people injured in scooter accidents at least several times a week,” said Dr. Eric Lavonas, an emergency physician at Denver Health, to KUSA. “Some of these injuries are minor — some are very serious.”

“I’ve certainly seen people with broken wrists and broken ankles. I’ve also personally taken care of two patients with very devastating head injuries,” he said.

The current Denver ordinance allows electric scooters to operate in bike lanes or streets with speed limits of 30 mph or less. If neither of those are available, scooters can travel on the sidewalks at speed of 6 mph or less.

Last week Denver Public Works announced it made an ordinance change recommendation to prohibit electric scooters from using city sidewalks.

UPDATE: The victim in this incident has been pronounced deceased. No one is being charged in this traffic crash. #Denver https://t.co/URS5d1ngap
