Marty’s Sunday Morning Forecast – More Storms – 8/11/19

Overview: A combination of moisture associated with the summer monsoon and low level humidity will combine with an approaching cold front to support numerous thunderstorms again today. The cold front won’t cool the air much, but it will bring much drier air over the area Monday and should greatly reduce our chances for storms early next week.

Today: Partly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms developing this afternoon and evening. Storms today will be most widespread over the mountains but scattered storms are possible everywhere. Over the mountains frequent cloud to ground lighting and heavy rain will be the primary concerns with a flash flooding threat anywhere stronger storms can interact with burn scars. The strongest storms over the plains could reach severe criteria with hail over an inch in diameter and wind gusts to near 60 mph accompanying heavy rain and frequent lighting. There is a slight threat for tornadoes today mainly northeast of Colorado Springs and Pueblo. Prior to thunderstorms arriving we should warm into the 80s and 90s over the plains with 70s for the mountains, but afternoon thunderstorms will cool the air nicely as they drift overhead.

Tonight: Thunderstorms will continue to drift eastward this evening then eventually weaken and come to an end, but possibly not until very late for the far eastern plains. We expect to be clearing nicely by morning with low temperatures falling into the 50s and 60s for all areas.

Extended: Much drier air will greatly reduce, and possibly eliminate thunderstorms from most areas on Monday, and although the air temperature may be a bit cooler for some the drier conditions will mean that we remain very warm all afternoon. Isolated storms are a little more likely on Tuesday, particularly over the mountains, but many areas will probably miss out on significant rainfall. Storms may increase over parts of the state on Wednesday, but storms look to be pretty spotty for the rest of the week.
