D2 goes back to school with free supplies for K-8

Thursday marked the first day of school for Harrison School District Two, and the students had a lot to look forward to.

District Two provided free school supplies for all students kindergarten through eighth grade, not including their charter schools.

“The initial cost for back to school is great,” said father Rey Luna. “You’re looking at a couple hundred dollars, and then filling in the gaps throughout the year. It can be a financial strain.”

The money for the school supplies came directly from Title One funding.

“They deserve to not have to worry about school supplies. They deserve to worry about their education. So we’ve got that covered,” assistant principle at Otero Elementary Ami Nunn told us.

The free school supplies benefitting the parents and student tremendously, but it also makes a huge impact on the schools and the teachers.

“We were able to extend what we has, just based on what we were able to buy in bulk at a better rate. We got more for our money, allowing more supplies and materials to go into our students hands,” said Otero Principal Amy Karbowski.

The district also received $180 million in renovation funding. Make sure to tune in to NewsChannel 13 at 5 on Saturday, to get a tour of the newly renovated Otero Elementary School.
