Shelter advisory lifted in Cheyenne Wells

Update: The situation with an armed suspect as been successfully resolved, says the Cheyenne Wells Sheriff’s Office. The shelter advisory has been lifted.

Officials say the incident was resolved without any fatalities or injuries. Highway 40 has been reopened.

Law enforcement entered the male suspect’s home at approximately 4:30 p.m. and found the suspect unresponsive but alive. He was arrested and transported via ambulance.

The Sheriff responded to reports of a gunshot in a home on Highway 40 where he encountered an armed suspect. The suspect fired at least one shot and remained inside the residence.

The Sheriff’s Office issued a Code Red alert at 8:45 a.m. warning residents to stay inside their homes. As of 3:55 p.m. the Code Red is still in effect. The Sheriff’s Office advises residents to remain sheltered if they are within the following one-mile radius until they receive the all-clear in the form of a Code Red alert:

North to south: Between South 2nd Street and County Road Q. West to east: Between County Road 43 and Highway 385.

At approximately 6:30 a.m. the Sheriff’s Office received a report of a gun shot in a neighboring home. The Sheriff responded to investigate and at 8:43 a.m. encountered the suspect. The Sheriff’s Office is not aware of any injuries or fatalities at this point.

Multiple law enforcement agencies are responding to the incident.
