Marty’s Saturday Morning Forecast – Mainly Mountain Storms – 8-3-19

Overview: The weather looks typical for early August with dry mornings, very warm afternoons, and scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms, especially over the mountains for the next several days.

Today: Partly cloudy and warm with scattered showers and thunderstorms developing primarily over the mountains this afternoon. An isolated storm or two may also develop along the I-25 corridor, but we aren’t expecting too many storms to develop east of the mountains today. The storms that do develop will be slow moving and could produce localized, sustained downpours, gusty wind, frequent lightning and small hail. High temperatures will reach the 80s and 90s for the plains, mainly 70s over our local mountain areas.

Tonight: Scattered showers and thunderstorms will wind down over and near the mountains this evening, then clearing through the night with temperatures falling into the 50s and 60s for most areas by morning.

Sunday: Partly cloudy and very warm again with scattered showers and thunderstorms increasing in coverage compared to Saturday. Storms on Sunday will have a better chance to drift across the plains, but we still expect most of the storms to develop over and near the mountains with the best thunderstorm coverage likely around the Pikes Peak Region. High temperatures will again reach the 80s and 90s for the plains with mainly 70s over the mountains.

Extended: We don’t expect dramatic changes in the weather pattern over the next week. Storms may be slightly more prevalent over the plains at times during the work week, but in general they will remain scattered with the mountains receiving the highest coverage of thunderstorms and therefore the heaviest rainfall through the week. Most storms should remain below severe criteria, but occasionally a stronger storm could produce some hail and very gusty wind to go along with the rain and lightning. The end of the week will probably be a little hotter than the rest of the week, but most days we expect 80s and 90s for the plains with 70s and 80s for the mountains and mountain valleys.
