Pueblo auto shop gives away 1,000 backpacks

As kids are getting ready to go back to school, one auto shop in Pueblo is doing their part to make the transition a bit easier on both kids and parents.

For the fourth year in a row, Geared Up Auto Care gave out backpacks filled with schools supplies to families for the school year.

They collected a thousand backpacks throughout the year and carried them in their truck bed and their car to hand out to kids on Thursday.

The money for each backpack comes directly from the community; part of each sale was put aside to help contribute to the cost of the embroidered bags.

“We look forward to giving back to the community,” said owner Rick Higgins.

“It’s a hand up, not a hand out. People in the community need help and we want to help give it to them,” added Andrea Higgins, Rick’s wife.

And to help in the community effort, Steel City Barber also set up shop right next to Geared Up, offering free haircuts for kids too.
